The Moss Mother is a major boss in Hollow Knight: Silksong and the matriarch of the Moss Grotto. She serves as the likely first significant challenge for players, testing their initial grasp of Hornet’s movement and combat mechanics.

Where to Find Moss Mother
Section titled “Where to Find Moss Mother”The Moss Mother is located in the Old Church, a sub-area within the Moss Grotto. Upon entering her arena, the room will rumble before she explodes out of a large, plant-like cocoon in the center of the room and lets out a screech, signaling the start of the fight.

How to Beat Moss Mother

Fight Strategy
Section titled “Fight Strategy”This encounter is an introduction to managing multiple threats. The key is to stay mobile and use the windows after her Swoop attack to deal damage. When she flies up to the ceiling, shift your focus from offense to defense. Use the summoned Moss Worms as a resource to replenish your Silk meter for healing with Bind. After enough damage, she will become stunned and fall to the ground; this is your best window for maximum damage.
Attacks & Counters
Section titled “Attacks & Counters”The Moss Mother has a simple but effective moveset consisting of three primary attacks. Learning to identify the telegraph for each attack is the key to defeating this early-game boss.
The Moss Mother coils up mid-air and then dives sharply to the ground. This is her most telegraphed attack.
Counter: Time your jump to leap over her as she hits the ground. Strike her from behind as she recovers.
She slams her head into the ceiling, causing 3 stalactites to fall.
Counter: Stop attacking and dodge. Watch the indicators, not the boss.
She headbutts the ceiling, causing 1-2 “moss worms” to drop.
Counter: Dodge the fall, then use the weak minions to safely replenish your Silk.
The Moss Mother directly echoes the role of the Gruz Mother from Hollow Knight as the introductory matriarch boss. Both encounters take place in what appear to be abandoned churches. Unlike the Gruz Mother, however, Moss Mother actively summons her young as part of her combat strategy.
