Cogwork Dancers Boss Guide (How to Beat)

The Cogwork Dancers are a duo boss in Act 2 that’s all about pattern recognition. Forget trying to brute force it; this fight is basically a rhythm game. You win by learning their tells and moving smart, not by hitting hard. They’re a mandatory fight to continue the story.

Cogwork Dancers

Location: Cogwork Core / Choral Chambers

Rewards: Access to the next Act 2 Quest

You’ll find the Dancers in a big room where the Cogwork Core and Choral Chambers meet. It’s west of the Songclave area. Beating them turns on an elevator so you can move on.

The runback from the Songclave bench is short, but you have to get past three big “Grand Reeds” enemies. The best strategy is to avoid fighting them.

  1. Exit the Bench Room From the bench in Songclave, go left up the wall and exit top-left.

  2. Avoid the Grand Reeds In the next area, wait for the Grand Reeds to jump, then just run under them. Fighting them is a waste of time and health.

  3. Enter the Arena The next screen over is the boss room.

The right gear makes this fight way easier. Some items are particularly effective.

  • Trinket: Ascendant’s Grip - Seriously, this trinket is a game-changer for this fight. While it’s technically possible to win without it, you’d be setting yourself up for a massive challenge. This is the intended tool for dodging their deadliest attack.
  • Trinket: Spool Extender - More silk means more heals. It’s a long fight, and you’ll be glad you have the extra resources.
  • Ability: Threadstorm - Good for hitting both Dancers when they group up.
  • Crest: Reaper Crest - The wide slashes make it easier to hit these guys since they move around so much.
  • Tools:
    • Warding Bell: A solid panic button. Lets you heal safely if you get cornered.
    • Threefold Pins: You can sometimes hit both Dancers with one throw.

This fight has a few phases. Just follow these steps and you’ll get the rhythm down.

  1. Read the Silk Telegraphs The Dancers ALWAYS show you where they’re going next with golden silk lines. This is the #1 rule of the fight: watch the lines and get out of the way. If you learn this, you’ve learned half the battle. Thin silk threads telegraph the exact path the Cogwork Dancers will take for their next move.

  2. Master the Wall Cling (Phases 1-2) Their big attack covers the whole floor with silk. That’s your cue to use Ascendant’s Grip. Jump to a wall and just hang out near the top until it’s over. This is the safest place in the room during this attack. Clinging to the upper part of the wall with Ascendant's Grip is the safest way to avoid the wide Silk Dance AoE attack.

  3. Punish the “Meet in the Middle” They’ll often dash to the center and hug for a few seconds. This is your main chance to do some real damage. When you see them look at the center, get ready to hit them hard.

Attack the Dancers when they embrace in the middle of the arena for a major damage opportunity.

  4. Adapt to Phase 3 After a while, they’ll stop moving together and their patterns get a bit trickier. The strategy is the same: stick to the walls, watch the lines, and only attack when they meet in the middle.

  5. Survive the Final Phase Once you kill one Dancer, the other one enters a frantic, enraged state. It gets faster and more erratic, but it’s also heavily weakened and should go down in just a few more hits.

Here’s a quick rundown of their main moves.

Silk Dance

Melee / Dash 1 Mask

They glide across the room in straight lines. You’ll see the silk path first.

Counter: See the line, move away. Simple as that.

Meet in the Middle

Melee / AoE 1 Mask (on contact)

They dash to the center and hug, making a small damage burst right where they meet.

Counter: Don’t stand in the dead center. Let them hug, then run in and punish them while they’re stuck together.

Silk Dance AoE

Area Denial 1 Mask

They cover most of the floor and air in a web of silk, then dash through it.

Counter: Dodging this on the ground is extremely difficult and not recommended. The intended and by far safest strategy is to jump to a wall and cling to it with Ascendant’s Grip until the attack is over.

  • Reward: Beating the Dancers turns on an elevator. This lets you get to the next area and continue the main quest.
